DH 212 - Periodontic Principles II

Description
Fundamental principles of periodontics, etiology, histo-pathology, classification of gingival and periodontal diseases, prevention and non-surgical treatment.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Define periodontal disease. Differentiate and classify gingival and periodontal diseases according to American Association of Periodontics (AAP).
  2. Define and utilize appropriate periodontal terms.
  3. Describe the current epidemiology of periodontal disease.
  4. List and understand the etiological factors of periodontal disease: microbial, occlusal, systemic, and local.
  5. Describe and identify the issues of the periodontium clinically, diagrammatically, and histologically both in health and in disease.
  6. Explain the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of clinical and radiographic evaluation and interpretation of periodontal diseases.
  8. Explain the role the dental hygienist plays in the maintenance phase of periodontal therapy.
  9. Discuss the concept of the periodontal referral in dentistry.
  10. Describe diagnosis and prognostic concepts in periodontal disease.
  11. Discuss the role host/parasite interaction and immunology plays in periodontal disease.
  12. Describe essential components in a periodontal disease preventive program.
  13. List, describe, and discuss non-surgical therapeutic techniques, their rationale, and prognosis used in treating periodontal patients.
  14. Describe the clinical and histologically aspects of periodontal wound healing.
  15. Delineate between the different types of sutures typically used during periodontal therapy.
  16. Using simulation models, remove periodontal sutures using an atraumatic technique. (Laboratory competency)
  17. On a partner, place and remove a periodontal dressing (Laboratory competency).
