DH 304 - Dental Hygiene Theory I

Description
Introduction to dental hygiene practice. Use and care of instruments, medical and dental histories, emergencies, infection control, appointment procedures and clinical operations.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Evaluate infection control procedures and protocols of disease transmission to prevent or control the spread of disease in the dental setting.
  2. Assess proper ergonomics to break down the signs and symptoms of ergonomic strain from improper positioning of the clinician, patient, and equipment.
  3. Evaluate a health history including vital signs to assess patients’ health status prior to treatment and the procedures to be followed during an emergency in the dental setting.
  4. Assess the extraoral and intraoral patient structures examined for normal or abnormal deviations and pathological conditions.
  5. Select dental hygiene instruments based on the components and function of the periodontium in the progression of health to disease.
  6. Present the characteristics, progression, and classification system of caries.
  7. Explain basic instrument design, principles of instrumentation techniques, and skills in relationship to health through disease.
  8. Explain the fundamentals of dental care planning including sequencing of services to meet the patient’s oral health needs.
  9. Justify the concept of dental polishing and devices used in polishing procedures, accepted techniques, and choice of polishing agents.
  10. Correlate preventive education and therapeutic care rendered at dental hygiene services to impact patient oral behavior.
  11. Demonstrate information literacy and research skills.
  12. Use concepts of practitioner cultural sensitivity with diverse populations.

Prerequisite: Admission to the B.S. Dental Hygiene program
