AM 151 - Fingerspelling I

Description
This course is designed to develop basic skills in receptive and expressive fingerspelling.

Please note: Students MUST earn a C- or better in this course for completion of the AAS or BAS Deaf Studies.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply basic skills in visual discrimination by properly decoding fingerspelled minimal pairs.
  2. Express skills in reading simple fingerspelled words executed at normal speeds.
  3. Read signed numbers 0-100 given in isolation and embedded in signed phrases.
  4. Produce fingerspelled words and simple phrases fluently and legibly, incorporating proper movement and rhythm between letters and words.
  5. Produce signed numbers from 0-100 at a normal speed.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate ASL communication skills based on Deaf cultural norms of behavior.
  7. Produce in ASL a minimum of basic mathematic operations including but not limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and apply them to problem solving.

Corequisite: AM 147  or Instructor approval
Graded: Letter Grade
