CHEM 355L - Quantitative Analysis Laboratory

Credits: 2
Description
Laboratory stressing the application and techniques of quantitative analysis, particularly gravimetric, titrimetric, complexometric, potentiometric, and calorimetric methods. Standard chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques also covered. Emphasis upon chemical calculations and equilibrium considerations as applied to chemical analysis. Must also be enrolled in CHEM 355 - Quantitative Analysis  in the same semester.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Perform quantitative analytical methods including titrations, pH measurements, spectrophotometry, and chromatography.
  2. Demonstrate quantitative laboratory skills capable of obtaining precise and accurate results.
  3. Communicate results properly using appropriate calculations, statistical analyses, estimates of precision (significant figures), estimates of accuracy (confidence intervals), and units (percent by mass, molarity, percent by volume, and parts per million).
  4. Prepare high quality plots using Excel to visualize and analyze data.
  5. Demonstrate proper use of volumetric glassware, including the burette, pipet, and volumetric flask and when their use is warranted.
  6. Assess the credibility of data obtained in the laboratory.
  7. Keep a good laboratory notebook.
  8. Apply appropriate methods of laboratory and chemical safety.
