BIOL 331 - Plant Taxonomy Credits: 3 Semesters Offered: Spring Campus/Sites Offered: Varies by semester. Offering Note: Campus may vary from year to year.
Description The study of vascular plant identification, naming, and classification, within an evolutionary context. Evolutionary processes and the history of systematics will be discussed. Laboratory experiences will emphasize angiosperm family characteristics, the collection and preservation of plant specimens, and the identification of the southern Nevada flora.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Differentiate the history and ranks of botanical classification.
- Dissect flowers and fruits and interpret all the morphologic features of those structures.
- Use dichotomous keys to identify unknown plants.
- Recognize members of the major vascular plant families that are common in southern Nevada.
- Recognize flowering plant evolution and phylogenetic relationships among the families studied.
Prerequisite: BIOL 190 and BIOL 191 Corequisite: None Graded: Letter Grade
