FUNS 119 - Funeral Service Merchandising and Marketing

Description
This course covers the many products that are traditionally available to the consumer through the funeral home establishment and related partnering agencies as well as establishing the basic principles of marketing and how they are utilized in the funeral industry. Emphasis will be given to the FTC Funeral Rule and how these regulations impact the industry and public at large.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Define merchandising and marketing terminology pertaining to funeral home operations and management.
  2. List the types of merchandise traditionally available in a funeral home as well as emerging newer trends.
  3. Explain merchandise components for marketing to the public.
  4. Describe the principles of marketing as they pertain to funeral home operations and management.
  5. Summarize the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC’s) Funeral Rule and the limitations it places on marketing and merchandising in the funeral industry.
  6. Show different methods of marketing products using displays, brochures, presentations, or simulations.
  7. Justify a position on whether internet marketing and merchandising is ethical for the funeral industry.
  8. Assess the feasibility of new services, products, and innovations for inclusion in actual practice.
  9. Create a marketing plan for a funeral home or product for a funeral home.
