FUNS 205 - Funeral Service Law and Ethics Credits: 3 Description This course covers the fundamentals of funeral service law with a focus on the ethical considerations relevant to the funeral profession. Emphasis is placed on, general law as it relates to funeral service, Nevada and other state laws, applicable Federal Laws, contracts and other legal documents, and finally the ethical concerns beyond the law.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Define basic legal and ethical terminology and those specific to the funeral service industry.
- Discuss the American system of jurisprudence, including its foundation, the sources and purposes of laws, and how the levels of law interact to provide rules for the funeral service and related industries.
- Explain how ethics are important to funeral industry professionals including what aspects of funeral service require ethical consideration.
- Describe the process of licensure in Nevada within the funeral service industry and other states, including issuance, revocation, suspension, and renewal of licenses.
- Differentiate between a valid legal document and an invalid and/or illegal document with emphasis on pre-need and at-need contracts, funeral price sheets, and other legal documents of the funeral service industry.
- Evaluate whether current ethical standards, rights, and responsibilities of funeral service professionals are adequate to ensure consumer confidence in the funeral service industry from the perspective of the funeral service industry, the consumer and the dead body.
