FUNS 234 - Funeral Directing

Description
This is an introduction to the art of funeral directing, the procedures used, the documentation needed and the purpose. Topics covered will include the arrangement types, services provided, documentation requirements, religious, non-secular, and non-traditional ceremonies. Emphasis will be placed on learning how to complete an arrangement conference folder and the ethical and professional requirements when working with families of the deceased.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Define specific terminology associated with funeral service and funeral arrangements.
  2. List the equipment and tools utilized by a funeral director to include audio visual equipment, church trucks, flower stands, casket jacks, vehicles.
  3. Identify the primary duties of a funeral director, documentation requirements, and service time-frames for funeral directors including pre-need, at-need, and aftercare.
  4. Explain the importance of the first call initial interaction with the family and first opportunity to collect vital statistics in order to determine the process and time frame for transfer of remains. 
  5. Describe why professionalism is critical to the relationship between funeral director and families of decedents including professional dress, general appearance, and demeanor.
  6. Perform mock funeral arrangements including the preparation of all applicable documents and forms.
  7. Differentiate between various forms needed for funeral service and those required for a specific service accommodating the selections made by a family.
  8. Differentiate between the fulfillment of a pre-need contract and an at-need contract. 
  9. Breakdown the historical significance of and the factors involved for funeral directors when working with individuals interested in cremation. 
  10. Compare funeral customs across cultures, religions, and non-secular and fraternal organizations including contemporary funeral services.
  11. Analyze the customer service aspects of a funeral director’s job including ensuring coordination with reputable vendors, thorough documentation, consideration of a family’s budget while creating a memorable experience for the friends and family of the decedent.
  12. Develop professional and ethical verbal and non-verbal communication skills critical to working with families, vendors, and the general public. 
  13. Design a funeral from an obituary and choose products to complete an arrangement conference folder.
