BIOL 207 - Phage Discovery Credits: 4 Description Bacteriophage biology is used as a model to introduce science students to the process of science, developing communication/collaboration skills, and employing quantitative reasoning. Students maintain a notebook, speak at group meetings, summarize their data in graphical format, and deliver an oral presentation.
Student Learning Outcomes
-
Demonstrate the scientific method by correctly analyzing, evaluating, and executing the relationships among observations, hypotheses, experimentation, data analysis, and conclusions.
-
Explain the techniques used to isolate and purify bacteriophages from environmental samples, characterize the virions with electron microscopy, and amplify DNA for sequencing using scientific and technical communication.
-
Document scientific results in accordance with practices established by federal granting agencies.
-
Use scientific, microbiology and molecular biology terminology correctly.
-
Exhibit collaboration teamwork skills required for the successful completion of a group project.
-
Examine the role of bacteriophages in microbial ecology.
