BIOL 207 - Phage Discovery

Credits: 4
Description
Bacteriophage biology is used as a model to introduce science students to the process of science, developing communication/collaboration skills, and employing quantitative reasoning. Students maintain a notebook, speak at group meetings, summarize their data in graphical format, and deliver an oral presentation.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate the scientific method by correctly analyzing, evaluating, and executing the relationships among observations, hypotheses, experimentation, data analysis, and conclusions.
  2. Explain the techniques used to isolate and purify bacteriophages from environmental samples, characterize the virions with electron microscopy, and amplify DNA for sequencing using scientific and technical communication.
  3. Document scientific results in accordance with practices established by federal granting agencies.
  4. Use scientific, microbiology and molecular biology terminology correctly.
  5. Exhibit collaboration teamwork skills required for the successful completion of a group project.
  6. Examine the role of bacteriophages in microbial ecology.
