BIOL 217 - Bacteriophage Genomics Credits: 3 Description Introduction to bacteriophage genomics and genome annotation. Sequenced phage genomes will be annotated and submitted for publication. Techniques covered include gene identification, start codon identification, and putative function assignment. Annotated genomes will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate the scientific method by correctly analyzing and evaluating the relationships among observations, hypotheses, experimentation, and the development of theories.
- Explain and perform the techniques used to identify genes in a bacteriophage genome.
- Identify start codons in a bacteriophage genome and assign predicted functions to putative phage proteins.
- Document scientific results in accordance with practices established by federal granting agencies.
- Use scientific, microbiology, and genomics terminology correctly.
- Exhibit collaborative teamwork skills required for the successful completion of a group project.
