Description
Fundamentals of geology including mineral and rock origins through various earth processes. Laboratories include rock identification and interpretation of topographic and geologic maps. Required weekend field trips.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Evaluate data in an orderly and concise format, based on the scientific method.
  2. Explain the fundamental components of plate tectonic theory, including types of plate boundaries and relation to earthquake and volcanic activity.
  3. Identify common rocks and minerals and correlate formation processes with tectonic or depositional setting.
  4. Analyze and interpret topographic and geologic maps.
  5. Recognize landscape features that result from the action of mass wasting, running water, groundwater, glaciation and wind.
