HIT 106B - Healthcare Reimbursement

Description
An introduction to the complex financial and reimbursement systems of the healthcare environment. This course includes the basics of health insurance, publicly funded programs, managed care, the revenue cycle, and legal issues impacting the billing process.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Describe basic health insurance concepts.
  2. Differentiate among different major insurer groups.
  3. Describe the revenue cycle process and its components.
  4. Calculate payer, provider, and patient financial responsibility based on insurance coverage and regulatory requirements.
  5. Validate medical necessity using local coverage determinations (LCD) and national coverage determinations (NCD), including mutually exclusive edits (MUE) and National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI).
