Description
This course examines the role of information systems and quality improvement processes used to monitor and improve healthcare outcomes. Covers use of information management to impact cost, safety, and coordination of care. Includes adaptations to information access and management in urban settings.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Enhance basic computer knowledge and competencies in the identification, access, evaluation, and use of information for nursing practice.
- Synthesize principles that form the basis for the organizational and professional health information systems used by health care professionals and consumers.
- Differentiate various types of health information systems and their clinical and administrative uses.
- Discuss increased use of telehealth and applications for delivering patient care at remote settings.
- Evaluate issues for information security and confidentiality and determine impact on patient safety and error prevention.
- Examine the role of standardized health care terminology and language in informatics.
- Relate legal issues, federal regulations and accreditation processes necessary for healthcare information technology compliance.
- Integrate technology, informatics and Internet use into nursing education and practice.
