DH 406 - Future Directions in Dental Hygiene Credits: 2 Description Exploration of career options to facilitate selection of a specialization track. Emphasis placed on current literature and policies that affect the future of the dental hygiene profession. Critical analysis of existing dental practice acts.

- Summarize the history and progression of Dental Hygiene as a profession.
- Explain the differences and imbalances in access to oral health care services.
- Compare and contrast the disparities in access to care according to socioeconomic levels, race and ethnicity, age, and gender.
- Justify how expanding access and ensuring equity to oral health care will improve the health of the nation.
- Outline the focus areas essential to bring about change for the dental hygiene profession and its role in health care delivery.
- Assess the future opportunities for dental hygienists in new and growing fields of practice.
- Analyze the advances in science and technology and how they will affect health care.
- Defend how the educational standards for dental hygiene providers will allow them to best serve the public.
- Verify the supervision requirements required for expanded function opportunities.
- Examine how self-regulation factors in to the health and longevity of the dental hygiene profession.
