BIOL 400 - Field School in Biology

Description
Field biology is a class designed to provide students with experience and knowledge of techniques commonly used in field research. The class focuses on the ecology of the region and the natural history of the plants and animals that occur there.  This is a field class and attendance during a long (approximately 2-week) field trip is a required part of the course. We will be away from campus on a single long trip during most of the class.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Adhere to field safety procedures and become familiar with hazards common to field biologists.
  2. Develop familiarity with techniques used to study and assess plant and wildlife populations.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in collection, use, and reporting of geospatial, taxonomic, and quantitative field data.
  4. Present well-written and complete field notes.
  5. Illustrate safe handling techniques for a variety of wildlife species.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of field guides to identify plants and animals in the field.
  7. Demonstrate proficiency in operation of basic field and laboratory equipment.

Prerequisite: BIOL 191  with a grade of C or better; and BIOL 341
