Description
This course is designed to introduce students to the American Deaf Culture and definitions of culturally linked terms and philosophies.

Please note: Students MUST earn a C- or better in this course for completion of the AAS or BAS Deaf Studies.

Student Learning Outcomes

Document the evolution of Deaf people during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Differentiate Deaf people’s physical, cultural, conflicts, behaviors and linguistic backgrounds from that of hearing people.
Compare how language acquisition differs between Deaf and hearing people.
Explain how the artistic, educational, medical, legal and social service systems impact Deaf people’s lives.
Identify the various types of technology and communication systems that have affected Deaf people’s lives.

Prerequisite: AM 147 with a grade of C- or higher; or instructor approval
