Description
Provides a foundation for critical decision making in the management of medically compromised patients during oral health care. Emphasis on precautions and treatment alterations for patients with medical complications and protocols managing a medical emergency.

Student Learning Outcomes

Evaluate the signs of a medical emergency and follow the protocols for patient management
Formulate a dental hygiene care plan to accommodate the special patient in the clinical setting to prevent medical complications
Differentiate standard of care responses to: unconsciousness, respiratory distress, altered consciousness, seizures, drug-related emergencies, chest pain, and cardiac arrest
Appraise the medicolegal implications of medical emergencies
Determine activities and equipment needed to prepare for dental office emergencies
Evaluate the management of common dental emergencies: anesthetic overdose, broken instrument, foreign body in the eye, airway obstruction, avulsed tooth, dislocated jaw, oral lacerations, and burns
