JOUR 100 - Introduction to Journalism and Media Studies Credits: 3 Description This required course introduces prospective majors to the pragmatic, performative and presentational aspects of journalism and media studies.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Explain the dynamic field of journalism including historical and present-day perspectives.
- Differentiate jobs in journalism.
- Define basic concepts in journalism including the following: the function of journalism, news values, news judgment, media law including libel, slander, and ethical issues.
- Use principles of research to identify primary sources and navigate online databases.
- Explore skills needed to report, write news, fact check, create multi-media.
- Use Associated Press Style for news writing and editing.
