Study of jazz literature for the layperson from the early 1900s to the present with emphasis on differentiating the various styles of jazz.

Understand the origins of Jazz and its development to the present
Name and list important artists from the various periods of Jazz history.
Understand the fundamentals of the jazz improvisation process.
Aurally recognize several Jazz artists from each period in Jazz history.
