READ 130 - Reading in the Disciplines Credits: 3 Description Students will learn the unique skills, including vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency, required to read textbooks and related materials in different subject areas. Students will learn how to adapt and apply academic reading and learning strategies to suit the distinct characteristics of college-level texts in academic disciplines.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Comprehend and retain information through reading college-level texts in various disciplines.
- Apply vocabulary study strategies including context clues, concept cards, glossary skills, and dictionary skills to learn vocabulary specific to their chosen discipline
- Apply reading strategies associated with the three stages of reading (before, during, and after), including highlighting, annotating, outlining, mapping, and summarizing
- Recognize patterns of organization
- Read critically and evaluate an author’s writing and ideas.
- Practice fluency and speed
- Write about texts in a variety of manners.
Prerequisite: Accuplacer Reading Score or READ 095 with a grade of C or better Corequisite: None Graded: Letter Grade
