CHEM 443 - Organic Spectroscopy and Structure

Credits: 2
Description
Constitutional and stereochemical structure from spectroscopic methods (mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet). Must be enrolled in CHEM 444 - Organic Structure Determination Laboratory  during the same semester.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Determine the structure of molecules exhibiting first-order NMR spectra.
  2. Determine molecular formula and structure from MS, NMR, combustion analysis, and other data.
  3. Use NMR, IR, and UV-Vis to identify functional groups.
  4. Apply concepts of topicity and magnetic equivalence.
  5. Recognize and apply the relationship between field strength, nuclear properties, chemical shift, and coupling constants.
  6. Evaluate the applications of spectroscopic determinations of organic molecules in environmental or biomedical contexts.
  7. Explain their impact on societal or technological issues.

Prerequisite: CHEM 241
Corequisite: None
Graded: Letter Grade
