DESCRIPTION

Focuses on the writing of fiction or poetry. As knowledge of the genres and traditions of literature is central to the development of a writer or poet, courses that include the study of the elements of fiction and poetry are integrated into the program.

Student Learning Outcomes


  1. Demonstrate knowledge and use of the forms and component elements of the genre (fiction or poetry).
  2. Identify purpose and audience within the context of fiction or poetry.
  3. Understand literary elements such as use of character, setting, point of view, plot, style, and the theme for fiction; metaphor, simile, meter, symbol, allusion, narrative, and theme for poetry.
  4. Complete a portfolio with work that exhibits effective use of language, self-editing, and controlled voice in a given genre.
