DESCRIPTION

The certificate is designed to prepare students for the national certification through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), 444 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 900, Chicago, Illinois 60611, (800) FOR-DANB. Students must successfully complete either ENG 100, 101, 107, or 113 with a C or above and may contact the Dental Assistant Program Director at 651-5851. Students must attend a Health Programs orientation and meet with a Health Programs advisor for additional advisement. Dental assistants are primarily employed in private dental offices but may work in public clinics, hospitals, and dental schools. The curriculum includes classroom and laboratory experience in dental sciences, dental materials, radiology, chair-side assisting, and dental office management. In the student’s last semester, the student will be placed in at least three clinical sites where they must complete 300 hours of clinical experience.

Student Learning Outcomes


  1. Practice current dental assistant clinical standards.
  2. Apply principles of psycho- and socio-cultural concepts, interpersonal skills, while providing supportive treatment to diverse dental client populations.
  3. Recognize and record general and oral conditions, provide preventive care, and use current dental technology as a member of the dental team.
