ESL 190 - ESL Capstone Sequence Credits: 3 Description The goal of this capstone course is for ESL students to write research essays based on analysis of audience, purpose, and rhetorical situations in college-level texts.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify superior-level capitalization and punctuation rules in sentences, identify writing samples, with accurate summaries and syntheses, and explain reference and citation rules.
- Recognize prepositions, clauses, connecting words, and language to control tone and describe their function in research papers.
- Define superior-level high-frequency vocabulary words.
- Construct research essays with superior-level grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, paraphrasing, summarizing, and synthesizing techniques for MLA citations, and compose paragraphs for research essays.
- Identify purpose, audience, and rhetorical forms through analysis of academic readings to be employed as evidence in research essays.
Prerequisite: ESL Placement Test; or ESL 139 with a grade of C- or higher; or Instructor approval Corequisite: None Graded: Letter Grade
