CLS 495 - Clinical Practicum - Microbiology Credits: 4 Semesters Offered: Fall, Spring Campus/Sites Offered: Off-campus Offering Note: Off-campus at clinical sites.
Description Clinical rotation in Microbiology. Designed to gain applied experiences and develop entry-level competencies as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Perform proper infection control techniques such as hand washing, gowning, gloving and masking.
- Use OSHA Standard Precautions/Universal Precautions.
- Use prescribed procedures to handle electrical, radiation, biological and fire hazards.
- Assemble specimens, controls, reagents and supplies.
- Prepare specimens, controls and reagents for analysis.
- Perform assigned tasks after minimal instruction, to completion and within specified time frames.
- Use standard operating procedures to correctly perform tasks in the microbiology department.
- Perform maintenance procedures on microbiology analyzers.
- Document maintenance procedure and control values.
- Use standard operating procedures to document patient results in the microbiology department.
- Identify patient samples with 100% accuracy.
- Identify major components of microbiology analyzers.
- Recognize clerical and technical errors and take corrective action.
- Plan workflow to effectively utilize available resources and time.
- Evaluate quality control data to determine acceptability of patient results for microbiology.
- Correlate patient results with health or disease states.
- Communicate and interact effectively and appropriately in the workplace with coworkers, hospital staff and patients.
- Project an image of professionalism including appearance, dress and behavior.
- Display initiative in assuming responsibility.
- Accept and conform to rules and procedures.
