CHEM 443 - Organic Spectroscopy and Structure Credits: 2 Description Constitutional and stereochemical structure from spectroscopic methods (mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet). Must be enrolled in CHEM 444 - Organic Structure Determination Laboratory during the same semester.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Determine the structure of molecules exhibiting first-order NMR spectra.
- Determine molecular formula and structure from MS, NMR, combustion analysis, and other data.
- Use NMR, IR, and UV-Vis to identify functional groups.
- Apply concepts of topicity and magnetic equivalence.
- Recognize and apply the relationship between field strength, nuclear properties, chemical shift, and coupling constants.
- Evaluate the applications of spectroscopic determinations of organic molecules in environmental or biomedical contexts.
- Explain their impact on societal or technological issues.
