Description
This course introduces the principles of management as they apply to the practice of the funeral profession. Management styles and what makes an effective manager are explored. Emphasis is placed on providing a well-rounded look into owning or managing a small funeral business utilizing a business plan.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Explain selected principles of small business management using terminology useful to the funeral services industry.
  2. Discuss the interpersonal, informational, and decisional roles and responsibilities of a funeral home manager or owner. 
  3. Analyze Human Resource concerns, laws, and staffing issues facing the funeral industry to create a benefit package for employees.
  4. Categorize and address primary risk management concerns of the funeral service industry.
  5. Argue ethics before profits or vice versa as the owner/manager of a funeral home.
  6. Assess the factors involved and feasibility of purchasing a funeral service business for a given scenario. 
  7. Determine the role of the funeral service business given the changing economy, dynamic societal norms, and trends in the funeral industry.
  8. Compare and contrast two primary management styles and why you would utilize one over the other with employees.
  9. Create a business plan for a funeral home or funeral product to market and sell.
