FUNS 284 - Embalming

Description
This is an introduction to the science of embalming, the procedures used, and the purpose. The history of the embalming process, along with why and when it is required will be discussed. Emphasis will be on the proper and ethical use of embalming chemicals and compounds, instruments and equipment used, and the embalming reporting for each case.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Define terminology and vocabulary related to embalming and its procedures.
  2. List conditions that require notification of death to public officials.
  3. Explain the protective measures required when embalming including personal and environmental protections, proper disposal of fluids and contaminated materials.
  4. Describe procedures and techniques used while embalming including raising and incising vessels, handling, treatment and disposition of the deceased, various sutures used to close incisions, and other procedures required for embalming.
  5. Discuss how different methods of decedent disposition meet the needs of surviving family members and other loved ones.
  6. Analyze the embalming techniques, procedures, instruments, and chemicals needed for a specific decedent given a set of facts surrounding a decedent’s condition.
  7. Justify position on ethical treatment of deceased human remains and their preparation utilizing embalming chemicals and instruments.
  8. Compare the different embalming processes related to different causes of death.
  9. Compare the effects of various chemical formularies on a decedent and justify their use.
  10. Generate a pre-embalming case analysis that includes a general observation of the body, notes from the medical facility and/or coroner, biographical data, physical markings or tattoos, missing limbs or digits and unique characteristics of the decedent.
