NURS 316 - Professional Nursing Communication

Description
This course focuses on enhancing communication skills essential for professional nursing practice. Students will explore theories and principles of effective communication within the context of healthcare delivery systems. Emphasis is placed on developing advanced verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills necessary for interacting with patients, families, interdisciplinary healthcare teams, and community stakeholders.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate proficiency in various modes of communication including verbal, non-verbal, written, and electronic communication techniques within the healthcare setting.
  2. Effectively communicate with members of the healthcare team, including physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and patients, to facilitate collaborative care delivery.
  3. Integrate fundamental nursing communication skills into classroom participation, professional practice, and in peer group settings.
  4. Utilize crucial communication techniques in personal, academic, and professional venues.
  5. Apply principles of patient-centered communication to establish therapeutic relationships, promote patient engagement, and enhance patient outcomes.
  6. Apply therapeutic communication skills and processes to affect positive changes in individuals from rural and other diverse populations.
  7. Identify culturally appropriate communication strategies in selected cultures.
