DH 210 - Clinical Dental Hygiene II

Description
Clinical application of diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic procedures utilized in patient care by a dental hygienist.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Use problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, instructor guidance and peer review as a learning experience that contributes to professional knowledge and growth.
  2. Use professional behavior, conduct, responsibility, and cultural sensitivity in all situations.
  3. Support teamwork between the student provider, supervising faculty, patient’s dentist and physician to provide safe, effective, and efficient dental hygiene care.
  4. Justify the need for dental radiographs, expose and interpret such radiographs with the assistance of the faculty.
  5. Judge patient’s need for pain control in clinical situations and administer local anesthesia consistent with the principles and techniques developed in the Dental Hygiene program.
  6. Provide dental hygiene preventive services with removal of hard and soft deposits, application of anti-cariogenic agents, and oral health education for patients with varying needs.
  7. Synthesize data gathered during patient assessment to develop a comprehensive dental hygiene care plan.
  8. Create a dental hygiene care plan using data gathered during patient assessment services such as salivary pH and PHP scores, nutrition, intraoral and extraoral exams, dental charting, periodontal assessment and charting, assessment of hard and soft deposits, caries and periodontal risk assessments, and a one-day dietary recall.
  9. Interpret each patient’s medical history and vital signs in a manner that will determine the specific needs of the patient.
  10. Appraise the effects tobacco use has on the oral cavity and general health.
