EDU 280 - Valuing Cultural Diversity Credits: 3 Description Introduces preservice educators to microcultures which may include class, ethnicity, gender, exceptionalities, religion, language, and age. Culturally appropriate pedagogical practices, dimensions of multicultural education, and educational implications of diversity emphasized. Service Learning hours will be required.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Examine one’s own awareness as a cultural being, and attitudes and acceptance of cultural diversity. (Human Relations)
- Recognize the dimensions of culture such as race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, and sexual orientation, and how they influence the U. S. educational process.
- Identify key concepts, instructional practice, and interpersonal interactions for implementing the dimensions of multicultural education in today’s contemporary and diverse classrooms and global society.
- Examine instructional practices, classroom interaction, and educational materials for elements of racism, stereotyping, and historical inaccuracies.
- Practice implementing appropriate pedagogy in teaching diverse learners across the curriculum.
