BIOL 202 - General Botany Credits: 4 Description BIOL 202 is an introduction to the development, anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, diversity and evolutionary relationships of the major plant groups and plant-like organisms. The topics include plant cell structure and function, cellular metabolism, physiology, nutrition, tissue systems, morphology, growth and development, environmental factors, ecology and mechanisms of evolution.
Student Learning Outcomes
- List and describe the morphology of the major plant and plant-like groups.
- Evaluate cellular structure, anatomy and physiology and their relationship to plant structure and function.
- Summarize and describe plant tissue systems and their relationship to plant structure and function.
- Assess and make conclusions about the process of energy acquisition via photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
- Examine the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
- Integrate the organization of plant structure, function and energy acquisition, and specify how they contribute to growth and development.
- Examine and compare differing environments and their effect on plant ecology and evolution.
- Conduct an independent research project, including a literature review, a written lab report and an oral presentation of the findings of the project.
Prerequisite: A grade of C or higher in BIOL 122 or BIOL 189 or BIOL 190 ; or Instructor approval
