OPHT 201B - Ophthalmic Dispensing I Credits: 5 Description Introduction to ophthalmic dispensing skills. Patient/client measurements, frame and lens material selection, prescription analysis and adjustment techniques will be covered. The student will develop basic lensometry skills using a manual lensometer. Students will learn and apply current ophthalmic A.N.S.I. standards. The student will learn the formulas and terminology pertinent to ophthalmic dispensing.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Discuss and identify different frame types and applications.
- Identify, discuss, and apply different styles of ophthalmic lenses.
- Develop an appreciation for patient / client eyeglass uses.
- Describe spectacle errors to the public.
- Explain the features and benefits of various frames and lenses.
- Demonstrate frame fitting and adjusting procedures.
- Identify, describe, state the usage, and properly use various ophthalmic hand tools.
- Demonstrate measurement techniques with P.D. ruler, seg Measures and pupilometer, distometer, penlight, and lens marking.
- Repair any given plastic or metal frame using the Hot Fingers, electric soldering unit, gas soldering torch and other repair tools.
- Apply current ANSI standards.
- Perform final inspection and standard alignment techniques for any given pair of eyewear.
- Discuss the scope of practice in Nevada for opticians.
- Present a report on a topic of choice on the optical industry.
- Demonstrate an ability to accurately analyze a spectacle prescription from an optometrist or an ophthalmologist.
- Develop cultural sensitivity and awareness within the workplace environment.
- Develop positive attitudes towards work and service to others.
- Develop positive communication and listening skills in human behavior and relationships.
- Deliver prescription eyewear/vision aids and instruct patient/customer/client in use and care.
- Provide follow up services, including eyewear/vision aids, lens and frame replacement.
- Maintain records including third party forms, inventory, and equipment.
- Discuss prescription eyewear/vision aids and other patient/customer/client related information (verbal and written) with the prescriber.
- Demonstrate frame fitting and adjusting procedures.
- Identify, state, define and apply all OSHA, Haz. Mat., and the safety guideline procedures and rules of; CSN, Health Science Department and the Opticianry program.
- Identify, state, define and apply knowledge of the history and development of opticianry.
- Identify and discuss job applications in the optical industry.
- Perform a minimum of basic arithmetic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and apply them to solving problems.
- Price and collect fees for vision aids and services.
