PHYS 182 - Physics for Scientists and Engineers III Credits: 3 Description Lecture in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and optics. Covers sound, temperature and thermometry, heat, gases, intermolecular forces, kinetic theory, entropy, nature of light, geometrical optics, physical optics including diffraction and interference, introduction of modern developments. Note: Students must register for PHYS 182L before regsitering for PHYS 182.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Apply Pascal’s Principle, Archimedes’ Principle, and Bernoulli’s Equation in fluid mechanics.
- Describe transverse waves and longitudinal waves.
- Know the different temperature scales and solve problems involving thermal expansion and heat transfers.
- Apply the First and Second law of thermodynamics.
- Describe ideal gases both macroscopically and microscopically.
- Understand the nature of light.
- Analyze image formation by mirrors and lenses both graphically and numerically.
- Solve problems involving the interference and diffraction of light.
- Know modern developments in physics.
- Develop the ability to reason and problem-solving skills.
