SOC 207 - Introduction to Sociological Theory Credits: 3 Description Examination of the works of classical and contemporary social theorists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Describe the historical origins and contemporary relevance of sociological theory.
- Classify the major types of sociological theory (positivist, interpretive and critical theory) and identify the intellectual traditions associated with each type.
- Apply major contemporary sociological perspectives (e.g., functionalism, symbolic interaction and conflict perspectives) to the study of society and social life.
- Identify the appropriate research methods associated with each sociological perspective and theoretical type.
- Critically analyze major sociological theories including those regarding the relationships between individual problems, social structure, and contemporary social issues.
