Some of these courses are program prerequisites and MUST be completed before a student is considered eligible for entry into the Program. Students in the last semester of the Associate of Science, Dental Science degree program may be eligible for application if they have completed the program prerequisites and submits a successful mid-semester satisfactory progress report. The A.S. Dental Science degree MUST be conferred before the start of the first semester of the B.S. Dental Hygiene Program.
The Bachelor of Science Dental Hygiene degree is the entry-level program that prepares graduates to become licensed prevention specialists in the dental health team providing health education, administering local anesthesia, removing deposits and stains from teeth, exposing x-rays, and applying topical fluoride. The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for enhanced roles and responsibilities of dental hygienists in public health, education, administration, research, management, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
This program of classroom and clinical instruction is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and has been granted the status of “approval without reporting requirements.” CODA is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education and can be contacted at (312) 440-4653 and 211 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60611.
