AM 253 - Deaf Culture Credits: 3 Description This course is designed to introduce students to the American Deaf Culture and definitions of culturally linked terms and philosophies.
Please note: Students MUST earn a C- or better in this course for completion of the AAS or BAS Deaf Studies.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Document the evolution of Deaf people during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
- Differentiate Deaf people’s physical, cultural, conflicts, behaviors and linguistic backgrounds from that of hearing people.
- Compare how language acquisition differs between Deaf and hearing people.
- Explain how the artistic, educational, medical, legal and social service systems impact Deaf people’s lives.
- Identify the various types of technology and communication systems that have affected Deaf people’s lives.
