Course Descriptions


The following course descriptions are intended to briefly describe the nature of each of the courses. For more complete information, departments or faculty can provide specific course syllabuses.

In addition to these hours, students are expected to complete homework assignments on their own time. These assignments may include library research, computer utilization, field trips, cultural performances, and other instructional activities.

  • MUS 232 - Recording Techniques II


    Credits: 3
    Description
    An intermediate course in multi-track recording techniques including discussions on session procedures, production techniques, tracking and overdubbing methods, and general equipment operation.

    2. Utilize intermediate theoretical aspects of audio recording.
    3. Demonstrate good recording skills.

  • MUS 239 - Virtual Studio Technology


    Credits: 3
    Description
    Explores the theory and application of hard-disc recording systems, particularly ProTools, from setup to mastering. Students have hands-on experience while learning concepts and techniques for proper functioning of MIDI, digital audio, I/O, plugins, etc. NOTE: This course uses Avid ProTools.

    Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Name basic features and functions of Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) hardware and software.
    2. Describe how to use basic features of DAW hardware and software.
    3. Explain how to use DAWs in the creation of music.
    4. Demonstrate a comprehension of DAW MIDI features.
    5. Operate a DAW for basic to intermediate music recordings utilizing both MIDI and audio.

  • MUS 240 - Virtual Studio Technology II


    Credits: 3
    Description
    A continuation of MUS 239 . Emphasizes advanced DAW usage, particularly ProTools. Students have hands-on experience with concepts and techniques including signal routing strategies, keyboard shortcuts, power commands, editing, automation and other advanced DAW features. NOTE: This course uses Avid ProTools.

    Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Distinguish features and functions of Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) hardware and software.
    2. Incorporate intermediate to advanced features of DAW hardware and software.
    3. Combine all DAW features for the creation of music.
    4. Manage DAW MIDI features.
    5. Setup a DAW for intermediate to advanced music recordings utilizing both MIDI and audio.
    6. Evaluate techniques and strategies for signal routing and mixing using a DAW.

  • MUS 251 - Jazz Fundamentals I


    Credits: 3
    Description
    Study of chord/scale relationships in improvising jazz/rock music. Includes voicings for keyboard and instrumental performance.

    1. Name and write the various modes based on the major, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales.
    2. Employ the principles of chord substitution.
    3. Name and write chords and scales to a high degree of sophistication.
    4. Know the principles of four- and five-part harmony.

    Description
    Continuation of skills from MUS 111  with an emphasis on pop, jazz, and contemporary piano styles.

  • MUS 256 - Jazz Keyboard Techniques II

    Description
    Continuation of MUS 255 . Emphasis on improvisation, composition, and performance with rhythm section.

    1. Demonstrate skills necessary for performance of pop, jazz and contemporary piano styles.
    2. Perform exercises and literature appropriate for their skill level.

  • MUS 260 - Studio Session Procedures


    Credits: 3
    Description
    A course in recording studio production developed as a real-world case study. Students participate in a semester-long project creating a commercial-release quality recording of a musical group. The entire process from preparation through mastering is involved. Studio etiquette, management, and artist psychology are also demonstrated. Up to 9 hours outside of scheduled class time may be required.

    1. Ascertain elements and plan for elements relating to recording session logistics and budgeting.
    2. Incorporate practical recording skills and studio etiquette.
    3. Independently manage recording sessions involving several musicians.
    4. Complete a finished commercial-level audio recording.

  • MUS 262 - Progressive R&B Music Production


    Credits: 3
    Description
    Focuses on techniques used in creating Hip-Hop, Rap, Contemporary R&B, and related styles of music. Examples of devices used (may vary) include current Native Instruments Maschine, Avid ProTools, many software plugins, Korg Kronos X Workstation, top-level microphones, and also vintage equipment such as Akai S900/MPC2000, and many other samplers and synthesizers from the 1970’s onward.

    Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Identify and explain fundamental musical elements in Progressive R&B Music styles.
    2. Explain principles and use of primary hardware and software used in this genre’s production.
    3. Incorporate knowledge of course recording equipment into practical use.
    4. Plan and complete a finished commercial-level audio recording in this genre.

  • MUS 264 - Ableton Live


    Credits: 3
    Description
    Provides a detailed study into the relationship between music production and computers. Topics include digital signal processing (DSP), software synthesis, plugins, computer audio hardware, and other components of the digital audio workstation (DAW). NOTE: This course uses Ableton Live.

    Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Assess detailed features and functions of common computer music hardware and software.
    2. Operate intermediate to complex features of Ableton Live computer music hardware and software.
    3. Assess how to use Ableton Live in the creation of music.
    4. Create MIDI music recordings using hardware and software together.

  • MUS 268 - Apple Logic

    Description

  • MUS 281B - Business of Music II

    Description
    A continuation of MUS 181 . Topics include starting a record label, recording budgets, record royalties, audits, legal agreements, and the future of the recording and music industry.

  • MUS 285 - Advanced Recording Techniques

    Description
    A continuation of MUS 232. Emphasis on hands-on recording projects, digital multitrack recording, hard-disk editing, and mixdown techniques.

  • MUS 292 - Audio Post-Production I


    Credits: 3
    Description
    An introduction to the technological and artistic applications of audio used for visual media. This course covers the basics of sound elements, audio formats, “digital conversions”, and strategies employed to address all of these. Topics and source materials experienced may include sound effect libraries, production music libraries and scored music, sound editing, on-location (“field”) audio, ADR, OMF files, “pre-dubs”, and 5.1 surround sound.

    Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Analyze a visual medium for its technical and aesthetic sound components.
    2. Interpret video editor’s specification sheets, locations sound rolls, and camera rolls.
    3. Classify the responsibilities of each sound design team role in post-production.
    4. Demonstrate competency of digital audio workstation features to edit, clean, layer, and otherwise manipulate all audio elements.
    5. Create spotting sheets/cue sheets for choosing sound effects, backgrounds, and ADR.
    6. Determine the audio needs of a for-picture project.
    7. Create a final mix of all involved audio elements using a digital audio workstation.
    8. Apply knowledge, terminology, and techniques specific to sound-for-picture such as “pre-dubs”, handling of OMF files, and “sanitizing” dialog tracks.

    Description
    Study and performance of representative choral music, sacred and secular, from the major musical types and historical movements.

  • MUSE 121 - Symphony Orchestra

    Description
    Rehearsal and performance of orchestral music of all periods. Required participation of scheduled performances. Audition required.

    1. Properly interpret styles and features of various orchestral works of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.
    2. Improve in the multi-faceted challenge of ensemble playing. The various facets include playing in tune, achieving rhythmic precision with the group, and interpreting nuances in the music as a group.

  • MUSE 165 - Steel Drum Band


    Credits: 1
    Description
    A performance-based class intended to provide the student with a general knowledge in the art of playing steel drums and percussion instruments related to the steel drum band.

    Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Students will be able to perform in a concert setting on the various instruments within the steel drum band.
    2. Students will be exposed to the national instrument of Trinidad, thus learning and experiencing a different culture.
    3. Students will experience different learning styles in the course of rehearsals. These styles will include reading printed arrangements, scale and technique studies, as well as rote learning.

    This performance-based course provides students with knowledge of the Mariachi music art form, with emphasis on traditional and contemporary Mariachi literature including the Son, Ranchera, Huapango, and Bolero song styles. Prior experience is required.
